    Suspended Textile Installations

Have you ever seen a life-sized fragile tank? Artist Jannick Deslauriers’ massive thread sculpture of a tank exemplifies her mastery of fiber arts, which offers both a solid structure and a hint of fragility. The three-dimensional structures that Deslauriers produces are both intricately crafted and delicate which makes her Tank piece even more fascinating. The tank is perhaps the best example that reflects Deslauriers’ intentions to simultaneously draw out a sense of destruction and fragility. On her website the artist’s statement gives insight to the motives behind Deslauriers’ work:

“Jannick Deslauriers’ work is a testimony to the poetry of our times. She expresses the helpless vulnerability we may feel when faced with the grace and beauty of created forms, which are at once disturbing and astounding. The same hands simultaneously both weave a story and unravel it. Elements from Jannick Deslauriers’ work create a discourse between fear and dreams, between civility and death, between harmony and conflict, between fantasy and horror. Her work expresses a dream which enables us to comprehend fully the contrasts inherent in our human condition and which allows us to understand our true nature.”

In addition to the tank, Deslauriers has created fabric installations that include a garden of poppies, a sewing machine, and a typewriter. Each of the suspended thread sculptures employ a similar construction. Using translucent fabric and dark-colored thread against a white backdrop, the pieces appear like floating illustrations.
